Beware The Feline Golfer With A Good Putter
Female golfers get a lot of stick from their mouthy male counterparts. “Golf is a man’s game,” the chauvinistic older-school members of the boys’ club might say, or “women just can’t play like men.”
What these men don’t realise is just how fun it is for women who know the opposite is true to hear foolish assumptions of that ilk. Unfounded pejoratives, such as the kind men direct a woman’s way when she threatens to beat him on his own territory, are nothing more than primal instincts wrapped up in fake cockiness. Male heckling, therefore, acts as nothing more than fuel for the female to get her revenge.
Who forgets what tennis player Billie Jean King did to Bobby Riggs in 1973 when he boasted of ‘superior male qualities?’ Livid by the grandiosity of the man’s arrogance, King challenged him to a game. “Come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough,” is basically what she said. She called his bluff, which, naturally, he didn’t expect from a woman. The archaic belief system from which Riggs was speaking was blown to shreds by King as she thrashed him in three straight sets. He left the court with his tail between his legs and lesson firmly learned.
Women golfers are making serious, ‘threatening’ advances on the male dominated sport, golf.
Annika Sorenstam, a Swedish golf prodigy, has been described as a robot for never breaking down during her game. She is a supremely focused, highly-skilled athlete who is arguably more competitive than the top players in the male pro golf league put together. Sorenstam and Mickey Wright are the only two female golfers ever to win 10 or more tournaments in two or more seasons on the LPGA Tour. There’s no joking about with Annika. Pity the foolish man who makes the foolish mistake of thinking he’s better than her.
Women, though popular culture may have us believe otherwise, are competitive, serious golfers.With the right putter and attitude, the feline golfer is a force to be reckoned with, not messed with.
